Both of our dogs were selected from bloodlines with the potential to perform in the show ring, but also for their courage and willingness to work. Their lines are from some of Germany's top working dogs, from many generations of uninterrupted schutzhund lineage. Of course dogs don't always turn out as planned, so first and foremost, our dogs are beloved members of our family. I've never owned a dog that didn't live it's life out with me. Like kids, each of our dogs have a talent or two, and that talent is what we concentrate on developing.

Max, 2½ years old, May 2005

Max is a dog that was bred to work. His sire and dam, both red papered German imports, are from Kör und Leistungszucht breedings. Virtually every dog in his pedigree 7 generations back is schutzhund titled. Many are also top German conformation champions.

Max is the ideal working dog - athletic, biddable, and a high drive dog. High working drive, high prey drive, high ball drive, high pack drive. No matter what you throw at him (preferably a tennis ball!), he excels at it. As long as he is working, he is blissfully happy.

He is also a fun dog to live with. He is such an animated dog and a real canine comedian, and he never fails to make me laugh at his antics.

I am fortunate to be blessed with such a bright and talented dog for my first obedience dog. Max is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs Inc., and is both AKC and UKC registered. He is a wonderful ambassador for his breed, and even though he is on the small side for a male, he definitely makes a BIG impression wherever we go.

Max is one leg from completing his CDX. He suffered a soft tissue injury in early January this year, and is now back in training getting conditioned and ready for Fall 2009 trials.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the top side of Luna's pedigree. Her sire was supposed to be a German national champion with advanced working titles. A red papered German import from a Kör und Leistungszucht breeding, Lauser vom Schwaiger Wappen.

However, in 2007 we were informed by AKC that this was not her sire. Through AKC's Frequently Used Sires program, we learned that her breeder had lied to us and AKC about her parentage and the health clearances in her pedigree.

While AKC did eventually find a DNA match to a sire (Muck "De-Vi-En"), there are now holes in her pedigree on her paternal granddam's lines where not only are the dogs not known, but no health clearances are known.

While Luna has very good structure and movement and showed some nice potential in the breed ring, unfortunately, she is dysplastic. Just before she started trialing for her CD last Fall, she suffered a torn cruciate ligament in her knee. Surgery repaired the damage, but she has a gait irregularity that prevents her from trialing. She is retired from competition, but enjoys being a therapy dog.

Luna is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs Inc., and has a wonderful temperament for therapy work. She loves people, but in particular, she adores children. She is a wonderful ambassador for the breed, and wins people over wherever she goes.
