Dances With Dogs
Author~Deb Davenport
Earlier this month, I started my young dog in Rally Novice. We
earned a leg and nice score of 92, but "it" wasn't there
yet. It felt a little rough, bumpy, he needed a lot of talking,
and even gave me the "look" - what the heck are we doing?
My old dog, Dazzle, is like an old glove - after 10 years, the fit
is perfect. With my young dog, we must learn the steps to the same
dance. I was trying to waltz...and he might have been working on
the Cha Cha!
In time, you and your dog will build such teamwork together that
you won't have to "talk" out loud to each other. It sort
of gets like an "old married couple", where you just KNOW
what the other is going to do, finish each other's sentences, waltz
to the same tune. You will do your "talking" with your
experience and your relationship. Competitive obedience success
is built on this foundation.
When you get there, you will know. It will feel like dancing. Like
silk. It will flow and swirl and the world will melt away and you
and your dog will meet heart to heart, soulmates.
